A történelmi Komárom helyén már a Római Birodalom idején stratégiai fontosságú erődítmény állt. Két vára Szlovákiában, az ahhoz kapcsolódó erődök a mai magyarországi Komárom területén, a Duna jobb oldalán találhatók.
